Located in the Old Town of Limassol, KafeNey is one of those rare gems of venues that offer unique live music experiences and an unmatched ambience. This is definitely not your usual café-bar, but an alternative music venue, where visitors can enjoy live music performances by accomplished musicians playing ethnic, jazz, traditional music or even rebetiko.
KafeNey derives its name from a play of the words ‘coffee-house’ and ‘Ney’- an ancient flute-like instrument that figures prominently in traditional Persian, Turkish and Arabic music. An indication of the ney’s antiquity is that there are depictions of ney players in wall paintings in the Egyptian pyramids, while actual neys were discovered in the excavations at Ur.
The venue may have opened as a refuge to music-lovers, but it is also worth-visiting on account of its unique ambience. Located on historic Genethliou Mitella street, people sitting at the bar’s outdoor tables can view one of the few streets in Limassol where all traditional buildings survive in their original state, with Limassol’s Turkish hammam is just a few steps away. The street also houses a visual performing arts centre, a tavern and an established live music place.
The bar itself is housed in a charming stone-walled building that used to operate as a vinegar warehouse. With a traditional-meets-ethnic deco, the venue exudes a sort of mystic simplicity that makes it ideal for a relaxing evening with a glass of wine. The atmosphere is cozy and warm, with a chilled crowd in casual-hip attire.
