Mikis Costeas


Mikis Costeas was born in occupied Lysi village (Cyprus) on the 27 November 1967. After the Turkish invasion in 1974 he moved to Larnaca with his family as a refugee.

He graduated the “Pancyprian Lyceum”(secondary school) in 1985 and in 1987 he gained a state scholarship to study music at the Music Academy “Carl Maria von Weber” in Dresden, Germany. He started at the piano and took conducting lessons with visiting professors, Prof. Miltiades Karides and Sir Colin Davis and in 1990 he began to study composition with the composer Prof. Wolfgang Strauss.

In 1992 he participated in the Pancyprian competition organised by the University of Cyprus to celebrate its opening day and obtained the second prize with his work “Eisodiko” written for string ensemble and four woodwind instruments.

In 1993-1995 he pursued further his music studies this time at electronic music with the composer Prof. Wilfried Jentzsch. His work “…Du Mai” written for symphony orchestra was presented in a series of eight concerts under the title “European Week” on the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the reunification of Germany. The work was performed by the “Europa Philharmonie” conducted by Reinhard Seehafer. Mikis Costeas has participated in many concerts of contemporary music in Germany, France, Greece and Cyprus.

Since 1995 he is teaching music in High Schools and in 1999 he became a regular member of the “Cyprus Composers Center”.
