Haris Sophocleous


Sophocleous Charalambos is a Phd Candidate in "Electronic Studio Composition", studying at Goldsmiths University under the supervision of Dr. Michael Young. He has recently received the "Nicolas Economou Foundation" Scholarship supporting his studies.

At the age of nine, he made his first steps into music. He started private accordion lessons, theory and history lessons at the Hellenic Conservatory of Music in Cyprus. He graduated with honors in all fields. His first composition was a Christmas song called 'Rebirth' (1992), for Chorus and Recorders. At the age of fifteen he joined the Lakatamia Philharmonic Band, becoming the leading Clarinet player.

Going to high school, he continued his music education, giving more focus to composition. His second composition was a song called 'Makarie' (1994) for Chorus, oboe, clarinet, electric bass and piano. During next year, high school musicians performed his third piece called 'Swing' (1995) for flute, oboe, clarinet, violin and cello.

After graduating from high school, he joined the Army. In 1996 he joined the Army's Music Philharmonic Band as a Clarinet, Percussion and Piano player. Discharging from the Army in 1997, he moved to Chicago continuing his music education at Roosevelt University pursuing his B.A degree in Music Composition. He graduated with honors in Fall 2001.

He studied Composition with major musicians like: Robert Lombardo, Pat Morehead, Dan Malone and Stacy Garrop. He also attended workshops and seminars with the conductor of the Chicago Civic Orchestra Cliff Colnot, the composer Augusta Reed Thomas and the flutist and composer Janice Misurell-Mitchell. 

In 2002, he moved to USC South Carolina pursuing his Master Degree.He studied composition under John Fitz-Roger and electronic composition under Reg Bain. He graduated with honors in Fall 2003.

The third movement of his Master Thesis "Edge of Perception" won the 2002 USC Saxophone Competition, and is currently being performed worldwide. The 2005 work "Perception" won the second place/prize ($4000) of the "Cyprus Ministry of Education Music Composition Competition". His 2005 work "Viennese" Kalamatianos was chosen to be premiered by the "Cyprus National Orchestra" at the Strovolos Municipal Theater on March 9th 2005.

In 2007 he collaborated with the "Aristofunny" Marionetten Theater in Berlin Germany, orchestrating Mozart's Opera "Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serrail" for sampled instruments and singers (premiered in Monaco). In 2008, he was again commissioned to write music for the play "Der Prinz Von Venedig" (sponsored by the Embassy of Cyprus in Berlin). The premiere took place at the "Puppentheater Berlin" on Feb. 21st. The play will be released on DVD/CD.

He briefly taught Music History and Grade 5-8 Theory at "Ethniko Odeon" in Cyprus, as well as giving private lessons to Greek students in the UK preparing them for their music entry exams at Greek Universities. He is currently teaching music at Hazelwood Elementary School in London.
