Constantinos Stylianou

Constantinos Stylianou

Greek Cypriot composer Constantinos Stylianou was born in 1972. He studied composition in London, where he now lives. His works have been performed by numerous ensembles and orchestras including the Jeunesse Musicale World Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra London.

Stylianou has reworked this antiwar drama by Spanish author Fernando Arrabal (born in 1932); in doing so, he has maintained the elements of theater of the absurd while radically stripping down the work’s dramaturgy and dialog to create an appropriate setting for the music.

Considered to be one of the most diverse composers of his generation, Constantinos' output has consistently eluded categorization, with works ranging from solo instrumental to symphonic and operatic ones. Works have been performed by leading orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Oxford Philomusica and the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, and in prestigious venues such as the Wigmore Hall in London, the King's Theatre in Edinburgh, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, the ORF in Vienna, and the Unesco Headquarters and Cathédrale Saint-Louis des Invalides in Paris. He is also the recipient of two Composition Awards by the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture.

His fascination and preoccupation with the human voice, and singing in general, has been consistent throughout his work. This is reflected in the recent Missa Brevis for the Helsinki Philharmonic Choir at the Kypria Festival 2007. The song cycle Chansons de fin cuer was based on poetry from the Lusignan Court in medieval Cyprus and has been performed with great acclaim in London and Paris in 2006. The recent song cycle Of the beautiful kingdom (2007) based on contemporary Greek-Cypriot poetry was presented in London, Bonn, Cyprus, Athens and Paris. The opera Picknick im Felde produced by the Linz Landestheater during the Linz European Cultural Capital 2009 is based on the play by Fernando Arrabal and was received with enthusiastic reviews. Following further performances in Cyprus, the work was presented at the Bartok Festival in Hungary this summer. Future projects include the new song-cycle again based on Greek-Cypriot poetry Of the beautiful kingdom 2, a new set of Piano Preludes and a Viola Concerto.
