Andys Skordis

Andys Skordis

Andys Skordis was born in Lefkosia, Cyprus in 1983. He liked music from a kid but didn’t really enjoy learning it till the moment he started playing electric guitar and composing songs for his bands “Off Tone Thieves” and “Spirits”. Andys went to serve the army when he was 18 but, as he says, he was lucky enough to join the military band in Cyprus, playing Euphonium, a nice way to spend 2 years of mandatory service!

At the age of 20 Andys left Cyprus and went to USA to study Jazz guitar but soon he switched to composition and film scoring, studying with great people as Vuk Kulenovic and Tibor Pusztai at Berklee College of Music, from where he graduated in 2007.

Andys then began coming closer to home with a long stop in Amsterdam where he was fortunate enough to meet more great people like Richard Ayres and Wim Hendrickx, with whom he studied composition, but also to meet Rafael Reina with whom he studied Karnatic music for 4 years.

During the past years, Andys’ music has been performed in Europe, America and Asia by various ensembles and performers. He has been awarded the BUMA Toonzetters Prize 2012 (one of the highest composition prizes in Holland), the 1st and 2nd prize in competitions by Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and various awards in other occasions. Andys has also been shortlisted for the Gaudeamus Prize 2012 and the Ereprijs 2011.

As Andys says: “I like to compose music for acoustical instruments but at the same time I formed with some friends the free improvisation/feeling band “Brain Masturbation” playing in various places. I also play percussion and Javanese Gamelan music. I love the sea but also the mountains and my favorite animal is the Platypus. I finished my studies in 2011 but I am still here (there?).”
